Confidential Counseling

The Framework

The Medical Society of Metropolitan Portland Physician Wellness Program addresses the barriers that typically prevent physicians from getting the help they need. The purpose of the Program is to create a safe harbor where physicians can seek the help they need and deserve. The practice of medicine is a highly stressful occupation. Doctors carry a relatively high degree of emotional stress, but seek help to a lesser degree and at a later stage than other professional groups.  This can be deleterious for themselves, their families and their patients.

The Program provides counseling services that are tailored to physicians' needs: it is quickly accessible at the convenience of the physician, confidential, free, private and minimally constrained by record keeping.

Program Features

  • Appointment hours are flexible with physicians' schedules in mind. Urgent appointments are available.
  • No diagnosis is made; no insurance is billed; no electronic records created.
  • Psychologists are experienced in counseling physicians and offer east side and west side locations.
  • Free to all physicians and PAs at no cost
  • No information disclosed to others without the physician's written consent
  • No role in disciplinary or fitness-for-duty evaluation

Testimonial

“I am a physician practicing in the Portland area with over 20 years of clinical experience. Recently a patient interaction and the subsequent actions of that patient put me under a great deal of professional and personal stress. I needed an outlet to voice my concerns and heard about the Physician Wellness Program offered through the Medical Society of Metropolitan Portland. The counselor allowed me to voice my concerns and put my experience in a different light for me. She said that although my interactions with this patient were a unique first time experience for me, I was assured that the circumstances were not unique to physicians. This certainly relieved some of the stress I was feeling and allowed me to put the experience in a different perspective. This process was done with complete anonymity. The Physician Wellness Program is a wonderful program for physicians in our community who often feel overwhelmed and misunderstood. One can only anticipate that with the changing healthcare landscape other physicians may need to utilize such a resource of support from within the medical community that understands the pressures and stressors of practicing medicine today.” ~ Anonymous
